Painters in China traditionally use solid ink sticks instead of liquid ink. These ink sticks are still often made by artisans who spend more than a year collecting ash, pounding, moulding, and painting each bar by hand.

This is the third episode of our “Artisans” series, where we explore China’s rich art history and its dedicated creators.

Its incredible how all the talent, dedication and hard work is put into the making of these ink sticks. This family must be incredibly proud of making these sticks, which their generation incorporated into their lives throughout the years. I never imagined the intensity and hard work that is put into these small sticks of ink. It is like so many things in our past how things were made, but all the quality, joy and hard work is gone. Machines now take place of a lot of things.😪😪🇨🇦

This looks very cool, and I was looking forward to getting an ink stick and trying it, until they mentioned bear bile as an ingredient.
