i am chinese living in America. I came there when i was a teenager. now at 50 years of age i am seeking for philosophical education from eastern philosophy
i believe the reason we have inequality and socio economic struggles in the western society is because of individualistic views. At work, schools, sports, and entertainment world you are taught about self actualization and individualism. You become your best when you can defeat others in the competition, that view is what leads to war, famine hunger, divide between the rich and the poor, the government is acting as a mediator amongst all people, trying to bring balance through taxation, social welfare programs, education and health services, when you become wealthy, you use more of the social resources and pay more taxes to society to compensate for those who need more social assistance through the government. Because of the government roles community groups and community services becomes less important in ones live, even with many social charities organizations in western countries, the ultimate role of the self is to provide a better life for oneself and its immediate family
Thats what i see in western culture, many single individual members of the society which are extremely lonely and isolated, because of this individualistic perspective of the society the western world embraces so much of its foundation based on free market economy and in pursuit of one own life happiness through consumerism. in my belief, these so called western social culture values is what caused the world to have so much division in wealth and poverty
