Best Dr. Smith scream ever? Episode 1, The Reluctant Stowaway. Something seriously happened to him when the Jupiter 2 lifted off the Launch Pad. I read on a Lost in Space fan website that the glowing effect around the Jupiter 2 was due to something called the Anti-Gravity Drive that was used to escape Earth's Gravity at full power, also producing a certain amount of watts. With The Robinson in Suspended Animation, they were completely protected for their 5 1/2 year journey to Alpha Centari. It was also mentioned that the scream Jonathan Harris did at liftoff was completely unscripted. In one of Jonathan Harris's interviews, he mentioned that when he rose up from the launch couch, Irwin Allen shouted out, THAT BEAUTIFUL EVIL FACE!!! Jonathan Harris knew he was in trouble and had to do something right away to stay on the show, because he would have been killed off after 5 episodes. The scream at liftoff in episode 1 was just an example of how Jonathan Harris started to change his lines from an Evil Saboteur to Comedic Villainy, and kept him working on Lost in Space for 83 episodes. Why was the character of Dr. Smith changed so drastically from the very early episodes? In Episode 1, he stowed away aboard the ship by knocking out a young guard and tossing him down a garbage chute! He was such a bad ass! Later on, he was scared of a tiny bug!
