What is a unit vector

Hello Brian. If the magnitude be negative, so what do you think about in this case that the unit vector be? For example in mechanical engineering there are principal stresses and oftenly they got negative values.

so unit vector is just a direction? with a magnitude of 1 (but since it's 1 we can just ignore it and take it as only the direction)
