As a shop worker, I'm not even blinking if i see someone stealing. Not my problem. Not paid enough to care.

I think having no money is a valid excuse for stealing food

✅️ Stealing food from corporations
❌️ Stealing non-essentials from small shops

Only slightly torn on this. Must be a shit feeling having people rob a shop that you’re supposed to look after, there’s a lot to be said for having pride in your work.

But I care more about people being able to obtain essentials (obvs it’s not always essentials I know) rather than the profits of large companies.

However, think we all agree theft from a family run or independent shop is absolutely never on.

Is the implication here that the majority of shops are owned by families and not massive shareholder controlled corporations?

It's a massive excuse to steal the things actually needed. Food, nappies, healthcare things, body and home cleaning stuff.

It's not an excuse to steal luxury like sweets, perfumes, make up, alcohol and electrics.

People need to be in a diar situation before they judge. I can guarantee that first worker has a freezer full of cheap shitty food (granted of that's what she can afford but she clearly isn't starving is she 😂😂).... Shocking really.

I used to work as a customer assistant in a large retail chain. I have sympathy for those that NEED these things and cannot afford them but that is not an excuse.

We had people coming in with a shopping list, stealing trolleys worth of stuff, alcohol, high end steaks all while reaking of cigarettes. That is not necessities, that is not I steal because I cannot afford to eat, that is I steal because I don’t want to work and I want the luxuries.

We had a homeless guy who would come in once a week a steal a bite size piece of cheese, that was it. I have sympathy for him and we used to give him small amounts because he didn’t take the Michael.

Stop excusing this behaviour, there needs to be a clamp down and the police need to be picking it up.

Remember, its morally and ethically okay to steal from Tesco, Waitrose Sainsbury's etc, or so the song goes...

If these people are not working they will be in receipt of benefits. There's no need to steal. Iv seen shoplifters in my local Sainsburys. They don't steal essential items it's booze or things they can sell. This is not out of need it's just greed to feed their habits. And people wonder why prices go up. Stores have to make up the difference somwhere.

BBC trying to humanise the very supermarkets that were engaged in illegal price gouging during the pandemic is absolutely hilarious

If you see someone stealing nappies/formula/basic foods - no you didn't

If you see someone stealing cosmetics or other unnecessary items, report that asap.

There's a big difference from being in need to being greedy.
