Will solar work on a north roof? Newcastle installation Part 1

preview_player
Показать описание
In this video we run through out latest solar install in Newcastle. This one is a bit different though and includes panels on the north and south roof. We take a look at how the installation is going together. We also take a look at the SolarEdge App to see how the south and north roof compare generation wise!

This video is part 1 and covers the solar installation and generation. Part 2 will cover the Tesla Powerwall!

As ever we really appreciate you watching, if you haven't subscribed already please hit the subscribe button and the little bell to get a notification when we release part 2!

NOTE: Unfortunately the audio was slightly corrupted during the app overview and so have been enhanced, this is why is sounds slightly robotic.

we had north fitted recently. South had an old 2.6kw array we didn't want to touch so we put 4kw on the north. Getting pretty similar results in summer (obviously north is bigger but generates a similar amount). Enough to go from 'cover base load' to 'put excess into car' in summer. And in winter hoping the indirect light still generates enough to cover home load. Every little helps as they say.

Demistifying the app and the ownership experience is really useful so thanks.

Good stuff. Looking forward to part 2

I hope these optimisers are reliable, even a 0.1% yearly failure rate would be a huge drag on any solar installer's business.

Now we into November and 4 months on, do you have an update on what the North facing panels have been generating recently. I'd be interested to know how much the output has dropped now the sun is getting lower. It's just I'm contemplating adding some North facing panels while the prices are so low currently.

I would love to see the follow up on north generation.

We are in West Yorkshire and our “best” roof is north facing, we can only fit around 5 on the south facing.

We previously dismissed solar as an option but this could change our mind.

8kw inverter on a 9kw system, half of which is north facing feels a little odd, I always was led to believe its better to oversize the PV vs inverter. Wouldn’t a 6kw inverter have made more sense and potential produced more during winter months?

Of course a north facing array will generate pv energy.
The PVWatts calculator estimates the annual production will be 50-60% of the south array, depending on the pitch of the roof(60% for 30degrees, 50% for 45degrees).
However, the north panels will have algae quickly growing on them and the production will go down.
Obviously ROI is not this customer’s main priority (SunPower costs 3x)
Let us know about the performance of the arrays after a year

Thanks! I was looking to get some panels fitted for my parents. They have part of their roof that faces south and part faces north

I thought they couldn't get much on the south side given they've got a mid terraced house and they apparently can have a whopping 14 panels on there which is fantastic tbh.

They'll be generating more than my 16 panels because mine are east facing, and South facing on my flat roof.

It'd be great if in the future, they could have it on the north side too. Sure enough they won't generate much on that side but honestly if it's a quarter of the south side that's still awesome

Will you be following up showing stats on the north roof?

Hi. Will Tesla’s “charge on solar” feature work with just solar panels and SolarEdge inverter? Or some other Tesla parts are required? Thanks.

I had a Solaredge optimiser fail after five years but my installer said the amount solar edge provided was too low to cover expenses so I ended up having to pay for it to be swapped out.

Not sure I'd go for them again as a result of that.

The law is now min 400mm to any edge of roof - this includes any bird protection skirting. - The gap to the guttering in this installation is less than 400mm so it does not comply with the regs.

Great video. Would love follow up as I want same north/south system as I only have a tiny roofs.

Does solar edge app let your summarise per string to see how much more the south face is doing?

We have 20*345WP on north and 10*355WP on south (in the north of the Netherlands, so climate is really similar to England). We currently generate 60 kWh in a day (18 degrees Celsius with plenty of sun). I'm very happy we managed to convince a company to install it. We hope to make 7000+ in a year.

What's with the random zooming in/out think I am about to have an aneurysm

Can you use SolaTrim instead of the SolaSkirt system. I prefer the SolaTrim with its lattice effect punch outs which I think are more effective than the lack of with the SolaSkirt. Thanks.

Is that an airsource heatpump on the back wall? Never seen one off the ground like that.

Great overview as always 👍. Is it possible to do a solar edge system without using any optimisers? Looking at the location that property is in, i couldn't see anything that would have caused shading on the south roof.

Why only 375w panels? Would 550w panels not make more sense? Amazing neat as always.
