"I Kulāiwi" speaks of the responsibilities that we all share to keep Hawaiʻi a viable home for our lāhui, the native people of Hawaiʻi. The lyrics walk us through the concept that our Akua have built and cared for our ʻāina so that we can exist and thrive upon it. It also shares that kānaka, the people, must also follow in caring for and guarding our sacred spaces so that they too may continue to exist for future generations. Lastly, the song is the promise from the next generation. The promise to carry forward the gifts, the hoʻokupu, that were left for them so that our home, our people, and our traditions continue on in perpetuity i kulāiwi e ola ai kākou. He nani ʻo Hawaiʻi nei.

I Kulāiwi:

Na ke Akua, i mālama mai
I ka ʻāina a me ke kai,
Mai ka lani ē

I kulāiwi
E ola ai kākou
A he nani, he nani
ʻO Hawaiʻi nei

Na ke kanaka, e kiaʻi mai
I nā wahi kapu
O nā ʻōiwi

I kulāiwi
E ola ai kākou
A he nani, he nani
ʻO Hawaiʻi nei

He iwi no kahiko,
Nāna e kahukahu nei,
He iwi kupuna,
No ka lāhui
No ka lāhui

Na nā kamaliʻi, e ʻauamo mai
I nā hoʻokupu e waiho nei
No ka hanauna nei.

I kulāiwi
E ola ai kākou
A he nani, he nani
ʻO Hawaiʻi nei
