URI#02 Why you should learn sound synthesis

unfa rambling indefinitely #02

I'm talking about the importance of being able to understand and program sound synthesizers by yourself, instead of relying on other people's presets or samples. Synthesized sounds are ubiquitous, and there's not a single thing I detest more in electronic music than using the same samples over and over...

Thank you! I so agree with your vision of the importance of creating new sound. I really just can't handle listening to most music on the radio these days, all sounds so exactly the same, not just in sound but also in structure (or rather the absence of it) and harmony (same). Melody had been totally lost in endless repeats of short simple phrases. Just liked t those drumsamples that turn into liverwurst on the ears by now.

Congratulations, you are making great series here. I agree in almost everything, except the 808 part (at least, partially). I wouldn't use it in all my compositions, but those are great to get a flavour of a style or even a different time. Is the same feeling I've got for the amen breaks, it just depend on how and when you use it. Keep on this, you're making something great, most of anything because you use free software. BTW, have you tried Renoise? I know, isn't free software, but it's great, doesn't have so much limitations on GNU/Linux, and is really cheap. Best regards!

Wooden sticks... you mean 'clave'. And I totally agree. Sound designing and synthesis is a way to express ourself, it's an artistic identity we must dig in. As a drummer I agree the fact that drums in today music are so (too) processed that it's difficult to know if it's real drum recording, sample, synthesis. Many times a mix of these. A song is a journey you must mix the song to bring the audience with you, to much information (layers) confuses the listener. The path is the key. Vomume processing, compression, filters etc. helps.

I compare music production with cooking. You can feed yourself with pre-made food, but if you enjoy making the meal yourself from scratch it is likely to taste better and you'll get better at it the more you do it. Programming your own sounds is an excellent basis for good craftsmanship and understanding the science (and the physics) in this field of knowledge translates over to other aspects of music production as well making you a better music producer overall. Synthesizer programming takes time to learn, but the gratification lies in having full control over the end result.

As the Zeppelin used to sing: Ramble on...;)

Talking about synthesis, what do you think of synthv1? Do you ever use it? I've started using it again these past weeks and made some patches.

Unfa: Yeah so this is why you should try to make your own sounds and be original.
Me: Yeah that sounds right I think I really agree!
Advertisement: So you totally should buy our collection of ready to use generic samples, synths and chord progressions they sound very cool just give us money already
