Love this idea, was thinking maybe put the flaps a quarter of an inch from the edge all the way around that way there are 4 flaps and the center for pins. Thanks Robin.

I like these little pincushions. Thanks for sharing the tutorial. I love that you show mistakes you've made and how to avoid them - very helpful.

I like that you share your "oops" with us as well as your final projects. I, too, always do a prototype to test the pattern and familiarize myself with the technique. Thank you for a great little pin/clip cushion tutorial!!! Too cute.

I'm gonna have to make that longer version of that cushion because I got my first ever pack of clips for Christmas and right now they are in my little drawer where I keep all the stuff I used when using my machine. It's kinda a mess so one of these should be perfect!

I love the idea of the flange to hold clips! My take on your design was to wonder if adding two or more flanges at once might be helpful, to hold more clips. Since the flange will always flop to one side or the other, having two flanges means each could flop to an opposite side and not interfere with one another.

A tip that works well for me, when I need to leave an opening for turning or stuffing, is to mark where I want to start/stop sewing with double pins. Maybe not everyone has this problem with zoning out and forgetting to NOT sew the opening closed, but it happens to me too often! So since I started putting double pins at the start/stop place, I am way better at noticing the time to quit sewing before I sabotage myself!

Since we are talking about pincushions, i'd like to share my own favorite pin cushion hack. Instead of using batting to stuff my pin cushion with, i prefer to use a mesh hair bun shaper. It's a plastic thing that looks like a scrubbing pad, used for making hair updo's. They are made to allow bobby pins etc. to stick into them easily, to hold hair neatly over them. I found that pins stick into it just beautifully with no resistance, and it has a very satisfying feel to it when poked with pins or needles. I covered mine with a stretch denim, and it is a real joy to use. I have long hair and have always been into vintage hair styles and updo's so I always have some of these around the house.

Watching you make these was like watching myself using different fabrics haha! After making 4 and quite a few of those other long scrappy/strippy ones, my ladder stitch has improved greatly, yeah! I've also thought about making one of these with more than 1 flap, so will try that idea out tomorrow.
Not much sewing done this week as house repair was going on, a day trip out and today some gardening work as the sun was out and warm for a change. Hope you have a nice weekend :)

I love these pin Cushing. They are so cute and look easy enough to make. You could make them all year and use and use them for little special gifts or to add as something extra to add to another gift. You make some really cute grafts as well as your quilts etc. Thank you for sharing your ideas.

I don't know why they stopped using sand in pin cushions. My grandmother said they helped keep the pins sharp. Also I just read somewhere a few weeks ago that you could use steelwool to help keep pins sharp. I might try it. Thank you for the idea for the clips. 😊

I love this pin cushion!! I need one to hold some clips.. Right now i have them in a tin and if I need one.. I have to pull it out grab a clip.. So much better if I can store some on a cushion like this. Question... Looks like you have the bottom larger than the top.. Is that because of the fiber fill? If yes.. How much larger is the bottom from the top??
Thanks again for a great project.. I'm gonna whip one up this weekend!! ☺

I've been hooked on making pin cushions... hens, owls, tufted cushions, on, and on. I'll be adding yours to my collection

This isn't related to this YouTube, but just to let you know Marie. I use Elmer's Washable school glue in the stick to adhere batting to fabric. It doesn't gum up your needle and works really well. It's also used in a lot of applique machine embroidery. I can't handle the spray adhesive smell.

Such a great idea! I have never seen this before. I use a lot of clips so this will come in handy.
