There are plot elements that are derived from real world happenings. Things like the death of Princess Di, the horse in the cycle race etc. I wondered about the lost mail bag found on Mont Blanc. It looks like this is a case of life imitating art rather than the reverse.
A little Googling does turn up the recovery of an Indian diplomatic mailbag lost in a plane crash on Mont Blanc. The plane crashed in 1966 but the bag was discovered 46 years later, about a decade after Amelie was released.
