I was looking at this just for fun and I came to a thought, do you know how deep space has the same magnificent colors? Like the giant Nebula. Could the soap be doing the same thing as dark matter is to the cosmos that gives us the what we see in space. I mean as far as surface tension, , the same principle.. I 'm going to ask the professor.

This is one of my fave sciency things cause it's so nifty and pretty! You forgot to mention: the milk needs to be high fat content - whole (4%) or higher works well. This won't work with 1% milk or skim. Also, you can get subtler swirls by soaking a Q-tip in the soap and putting it in the milk near the colors. The soap is lipophobic (repels fat molecules) in the milk (why you need high fat content) and the rest is just the liquid going with the current.
