Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia, is with 1642 meters the deepest and with more than 25 million years, the oldest freshwater lake on Earth. 23% of the world’s fresh water is located in the 673 km long and up to 83 km wide lake. The lake is home to over a thousand endemic species. 90% of the biomass are Amphipods, which reach a size from a few millimeters to about ten centimeters. The water temperature in early June was 2 to 4 degrees Celsius.

This video is slept on. So is this lake. Both deserve more recognition and research.

I love the sponges (Lubomirskia baikalensis), they are the reason why Lake Baikal looks so unique

Beautiful video! I love how you managed to capture such amazing shots of all the life. The sponges and amphipods are spectacular. I really hope you go back there one day to film again, i'm sure there is more to see. You gained a subscriber!

I appreciate how this video is simply showing us the life in the lake, instead of what other videos do when most of the content is just talking heads (from the waist up) spoonfeeding the viewers both during and between each footage of nature.

I almost stopped watching this 40 seconds in thinking it was a vodka commercial. Glad I didn't.

That is absolutely stunningly beautiful! Was this natural light in a more shallow area than the bottom? Does sunlight reach the bottom? I loved the squared off broken pieces of the rock formation because the ice in the Winter takes this shape. I just love this lake, especially the turquoise clear ice in the sunlight. Another unusual thing I noticed was the saguaro-like plants and that lakescape being so serene because there were not lots of fish swimming everywhere. It wasn't eat or be eaten like the ocean. Also the crystal clear water. I also love the clear springs in Florida. I wrote a storybook about them but I need to finish it and polish it up. It's a children's educational adventure book.

if 90% biomass are Amphipods, does that mean these Amphipods mostly eat other Amphipods?
