Black geometry in Maya viewport

In this quick tip video I am going to show you how to solve an issue I encounter while importing geometry from an old maya scene.
The issue is simple. Even with the normals facing the right way and with the default lambert assigned, the geometry displays black in the viewport.

BTW ATTENTION: It helped with one object, but didn't helped with other. So I found another solution!!! Select object --- Display ---- Polygons ---- Reset Display. Worked for me too!

But it would be nice if you hold the mouse on every button for at least 1 second. I can barely see the steps clearly even with 0.25x speed.

how are you gonna do with Houdini geo import from other software and has the same issue ?

Hm, thanks for this, I’m having an issue with a model I’m working on (didn’t import it) where parts of it show up as black in to Top viewport but normal shaded in all the others, and another part of the model (which is a seperate object at the moment) is completely invisible in the top viewport, yet visible and selectable in all others

I was facing the same issue few month back,
Then i remodeled that whole object
