I am going through all the motions and emotions. I’ve had to grow up so much in the last year.
The last time we visited, my grandpa was still at the house but he didn’t recognize me anymore. He’s in hospice now and has been at the old folks home for years. Seeing first hand what Alzheimer’s does has been incredibly difficult.
My grandma, a stomach cancer surviver, is very frail and small but is still so unimaginably strong. I’ve spent my time by her side making sure she doesn’t fall as she does things and I have never been more moved. Her tenacity for life and how much care she puts into her actions even when she is in so much pain really affected me. How often I half ass my tasks just because I can while I watch her lay a towel perfectly before sitting on it, or how she does her own laundry even though she knows she has help on the way
I heard her saying to herself “頑張らなきゃ” (have to keep trying my best) to herself and I immediately sobbed
She’s taught me so much and she has no idea
I wish to be even half the woman she is
She didn’t even mind my hair at all. I kinda knew she wouldnt. My parents made it a big deal but I know my grandma just wants to see us as we are. She already has a daughter that left their tiny town and married a foreigner :)
I said “grandma Im sorry for showing up here like this, it’s crazy huh? Do you like it?”
And she said “well you like it don’t you?”
And that was it

I'm half Japanese and half black. My grandparents live in the very deep inaka and they would be super surprised to see me with pierced ears, let alone dyed hair. Your hair is beautiful btw!💖
