This robot might just out-smile you.

Researchers at Columbia University recently introduced “Emo,” a new humanoid robot capable of mimicking real-time facial expressions and even anticipating your smile.

Created by a team led by Hod Lipson, Emo features 26 actuators that enable lifelike facial movements and expressions. Its eyes are equipped with high-resolution cameras for eye contact, and the robot's actuators and motors are concealed beneath realistic blue silicone skin.

The team developed two AI models for Emo: one predicts human expressions, while the other controls the actuators. Trained on videos of various facial expressions, Emo can replicate subtle muscle movements and predict human expressions with about 70% accuracy. Additionally, Emo can perform actions like raising eyebrows and frowning.
