Ethologist, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace inaugurated the lectures at Starmus VII, held on May 13th in Bratislava.

This year’s edition of Starmus, conveniently named Starmus Earth, focused on the pressing issues facing our planet, and Dr. Goodall, at the remarkable age of 90, delivered an unforgettable speech titled "Reason for Hope."

Dr. Goodall emphasizes the uniqueness of Earth in the vast cosmos, reflecting on how our perspective has shifted since space exploration revealed our planet’s fragility. She urges global action to protect our singular home amidst escalating climate change challenges. Jane Goodall discusses the current climate crisis and its devastating effects, including severe weather patterns, rising sea levels, and the ongoing sixth great extinction caused by human activity. Her message underscores the urgency of addressing these critical issues.

Despite the grim realities, Dr. Goodall remains optimistic, and this is what gives her lecture its title. She points to three main sources of hope. First, scientific innovation offers potential solutions for sustainable living and environmental conservation. Advances in science provide tools and knowledge that can help us address pressing environmental issues. Second, nature’s resilience is a powerful source of optimism. Given time and the right support, the natural world has a remarkable ability to recover and regenerate. Finally, the inspiring work of young people through initiatives like Roots and Shoots brings hope.

This program engages youth in environmental and social activism across 70 countries, demonstrating the potential of the next generation to drive positive change.
