I did a class speech on the symbolic meaning of the Portuguese flag in 5th grade. This brings back a lot of those memories for me.

Well it's no surprise that Christianity is deeply rooted to the Portuguese self-image, after all the nation's existence was an act of resistance to the Moorish Islamic conquest of Iberia.

The USA: We can't endorse religion

Also the USA: In God we trust

The Portuguese flag is a symbol of a sovereign state.
The Other flag (I’m not sure what it’s called), is the symbol of a religion

As a Portuguese, I can easily say that we are far less religious than USA but aren't really bothered with this symbolism. In some pages of our passport we even have pictures of a church.

Thing is Portugals flag represents a nation and just happens to have religious symbols. The Christian flag obviously is made specifically to endorse a religion

The Christian flag represents Christianity and thus constitutes an endorsement of religion.

The Portuguese flag, while incorporating lots of religious symbolism, represents the Portuguese nation, including non-Christian Portuguese people, and thus does not constitute a religious symbol and cannot be equated with the Christian flag.

Any discussion over the implications of this symbolism and if they intrude on the separation of church and state is for Portugal's own courts to mediate, not that of a foreign country.

Just a curiosity about the portuguese flag. Of all its current symbols, the shields (called «quinas» in portuguese) with the 30 coins is the oldest one still used, dating back to the 12th century. The golden castles were added a couple of centuries later and represent seven moorish kings defeated in battle. The armillary sphere dates from the 17th century and represents the oversea expansion and colonization. Finally, the red and green background was added in 1911 after the deposition of the Monarchy when Portugal became a Republic and it is inspired by the (Portuguese) Republican Party flag. Before that, it used to be white and blue, which were the colors of the House of Bragança, the reigning royal family.

That's a very interesting take, but then again the flags of countries we now have are from when religion was a crucial part of every state. By that logic, neither the flag of England or Scotland should be flown, being the cross of St. George and St. Andrews respectively, for being the most obvious examples I can come up with. Every state has deep religious symbolism in its flag.

"Government cannot endorce religion." -US Constitution

"I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the United States of America. And to the Republic, for which it stands, one nation, *under God* ..." -US Pledge of allegiance to the flag.

Not supposed to endorce religion, are we now?

(It didn't used to have the under God line, it was added during the Cold War to make America seem a Christian state since the USSR was an atheist state.)

As a Portuguese, thank you. It’s really hard to find an American talking about Portugal

Even if the portugues flag has all those religius simbols on it, it's first and all the simbol of the Portugues nation, a secular state, not a religius order

Portugal and Christianity are extremely deeply linked. The entire country came to be based on resistance against muslim moors in Iberia after all
