Might put some of the butane on the bench and move the sensor towards it. It will sit there on the bench and mix with the air in different concentrations and make for a bit better sensitivity test.

Nice demonstration thank you. These sensors have a heater which requires some power to run them. Not good for battery operation and longevity I guess...

I have been wanting to make an air quality monitoring station using the MQ sensors for a LONG time, but I have never actually taken the time to do it. There are a LOT of MQ-type sensors, and they have analog outputs as well as the digital output used in this video. My concept was to use an Arduino Mega (with 16 analog inputs) to monitor an array of sensors. I would also attach an RTC module so that time could be tracked and an SD card module to log data. I would read all the sensors, say, once per minute and log them to a .csv file on the SD card.

I did this once with a PMS-5003 particulate sensor and I got some VERY interesting results logged. Perhaps I should include one of those in my ideal Air Quality Sensing fixture.

I seem to recall that the brand new MQ-type sensors need to be powered for 48 hours prior to use, to "burn them in", and upon powering one up that is burned in you have to power it for 24 hours to allow the internal element to warm up and settle. Do I have that right?

It is as sensitive as unspecific ... use alcohol vapor and it will trigger too faster even. Just like ESR blood exam, it is very sensitive and when ESR takes little time something has happened...but you never will tell why, so is basically useless.
Do you know what happens with false alarms repeatedly? People begin to ignore the alarm just like the story Peter and the Wolf.
Make an alarm put on you kitchen and the first flambé you do it will trigger it. Cleaning the refrigerator with alcohol to avoid bad smell? It will trigger it. Using a window cleaner. It will trigger it.

I believe a CO2 sensor will be a bit more expensive, as it provides a numerical output. AliExpres sell SCD40 with i2c connection.

That is amazing response time. It beeped when you barely pressed the button, and there was a lot of travel, before it even made a sound. What is the difference between that & the other models? Maybe some of those might be better than smoke alarms. I have seem some tests indicating that smoke alarms might not be as responsive as one might hope.
