Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam said on Friday that although there are early indicators suggesting Canada has reached its peak of COVID-19 cases in this Omicron-driven fifth-wave, daily hospitalization numbers are still “rising steeply.”
“Although there is a degree of underestimation due to current testing policies, the seven-day average of close to 27,000 cases reported daily as of Jan. 19 shows continuing high rates of infection,” she said.
Tam also pointed out the national average daily case count has decreased by 28 per cent compared to last week.
On Monday, the federal government also approved the country’s first at-home oral COVID-19 antiviral treatment. Paxlovid, Pfizer’s antiviral drug, has been found to reduce risk of hospitalization and death by 89 per cent in clinical trial data submitted to Health Canada.
