How To Open A Stubborn Jar Lid

When a jar is vacuum-sealed, the different air pressures make it hard to open. But you can use a few simple tricks to break that stubborn seal.

The best way to open a jar (without ruining the lid by bending it) is the turn the jar upside down with the lid on a hard and flat surface (like tile, linoleum, stone counters etc. Not something soft or that can damage like wooden floors). With the jar in both hands smack the lid flat against the hard surface several times with force (don't break the jar). The pressure of the air in the jar will change suddenly as the lid hits the surface and the food inside moves. The lid will pop off easily afterwards. If you get good you just have the hit the lid once on the surface and you can open it. I had to open more than 200 super large pickle jars for volunteer events. Works everytime, even with sticky lids for previously used jam jars.

I tried every one of these, even tried boiling water, but there was just this one jar that was just SO stubborn, and it was only until I broke the actual lid itself that the seal broke. Boy, that was an experience.
