The real criminals are the ones that assigned her 39 patients.Outrageous.

I’m an RN myself. The facility should be charged here for leaving her with that amount of patients. You could not pay me enough to work in long term care for this reason. Sadly for the patients, many nurses feel this way.

A nurse is a human being, not a machine! Expecting proper care of 39 patients by one human? Crazy! The facility should be held responsible!

Absolutely horrible to hold a single individual accountable for a systemic failure. Hold the facility accountable.

This is why EXACTLY why Physicians/PA’s/NP’s should run administrations; not the ppl with the MBA’s who haven’t stepped foot in a clinical situation

Who the freak is supposed to "witness" a patient fall when there are 39 patients?! I'm overwhelmed sometimes with five on a stroke floor...this is insane! Prayers for this nurse...

After 36 years of nursing I can't wait to get out! This is terrifying. Administrators put nurses in a horrible position. If we walk out we can be charged with abandonment. Something has to change. One of my son's has a BSN and left the field years ago due to the unsafe environment. I just pray I can make it to retirement without a tragedy. For years on my way to work I have prayed " Please don't let me harm someone." The stress is crushing.

As a 25 yr Nurse, I am shocked anyone this day and age would even consider going into this career, let alone pay student loans to do it. The liability and scape goating of nurses is incomprehensible.

my mom is a nurse and we just had an issue with the "right to fall" basically she works in cardio rehab and there was a patient that was obese and pretty much double my moms size. anyway she started to pass out and my mom didn't want her to smash her head on the ground so my mom caught her or at least attempted to. my mom managed to keep the lady from hurting herself but at the same time my mom ended up having severe problems with her neck and back after that to the point where she couldn't hold any weight or work anymore. the hospital blamed her. said that it was her fault and she should've let the lady fall. then they moved her down to a lower paying position that she was able to do without hurting long story short hospitals don't give a fuck about their workers but their own reputations instead

I'm a 31 year critical care nurse. What is really amazing is that among the remedial actions the facility presented immediately after this incident- nowhere is increasing the staff to an appropriate level ever mentioned!!!

As a nurse of 18 years of experience in long term care, we are set up for failure. Just last month, I had a total of 57 patients to myself because of call offs. None of the management staff ever came in to help. It was unbearable and very dangerous. If I would have known I was the only nurse I would have never accepted report and left after notifying the agency I worked for. Needless to say, I was tricked into believing the other nurses we’re running late. There was no way in hell to follow all of ever patients orders. Vital signs on every patient, yeah right! They were lucky to receive their meds much less any treatment. It was a nightmare! I wish to god I would have never went to nursing school. I feel like a lamb led to slaughter with all of the state laws and lack of limits on nurse/ patient ratios. The nurse will always get put under the bus and never the facility. It’s real easy to tscrew one nurse over rather than take responsibility as a facility. This is only one of the many horrors over the years that I have been a part of. Things need to change!!!

Thank you for sharing this. I am an RN the UK. I recently joined an agency to work on my off days. I booked my first shift which was a night shift with them last week on the 3rd of May, to my amazement I was handed over 38 residents on a sheet of paper, no induction, didn't know fire exits, etc. I became so worried, I have never been in such a situation as I work as a neuroscience nurse in the hospital. All I did was to say a prayer, did meditations, enteral feeds for 9 residents, and literally became a night 🌙 vigilante moving from one room to another till day break. It was a horrific night shift, I hear this sort of news but didn't know I would also experience it. The government needs to do something about these capitalist who only thinks about the financial gain but not of service to humanity.

One facility tried to tell me I would get 40 patients in an interview and I literally laughed out loud. It became dead quiet in the room (3 people interviewing me) and I looked at each one and said, "ur kidding right?" Crazy how facilities just don't care for not only for the horrible quality care these patients are getting but not having the nurses back on patient overload.

I’m a nurse. We usually have 5-6-7 pts in our hospital, and sometimes it feels like too much. 39- unbelievable! It’s NOT safe. Every nurse with 39 pts will be cutting the corners on pt safety to say the least. And the thing is, you can’t even walk out on that assignment, it might be considered an abandonment and cost you license.

I’m a 30 yr RN and sadly in LTC facilities this staffing ratio is happening more and more. I’m leaving a LTC job now where there is no receptionist, no medical secretary and two nurses, sometimes only one nurse has to let visitors into locked entrance, answer all phone calls (which calls are family members wanting updates, hospitals for admission reports) AND we have to make appointments for the skilled patients. Doing all these tasks on top of passing meds, wound care, extra documentation for covid wing patients. This is why I’m leaving this job. I pray for the patients there and their families. But families observe the short staffing….they have to know what can happen. Nurses are not capable of being at anyones bedside except for a few short moments. Quality of care is poor and it’s not the nurses or CNAs faults.

I'm an RN, I worked in A LTC facility for 1 year. I was in charge of 40 patients at times and also administered medications to all 40 patients. I had to leave the facility because I recognized how unsafe this was for my patients and for me as a nurse. I definitely felt like my license was at risk.
When you address these concerns with the supervisor they tell you to do your best.. they don't care. Pleaseeee protect yourself and your patients by refusing anything that seems unsafe.

Nurses need to just stop working at these facilities, point blank. Nursing unions need to stop laying down and being all buddy-buddy with administrations. Gross negligence by the facility. And families of patients need to start holding the facilities accountable. Drop in and ask how many staff are on your relative’s unit. The administrations will never listen to the complaints of the staff. Only customer complaints will have any influence.

I just graduated from nursing school and this is terrifying. I love nursing, but I would leave the profession in a blink, if I have to.

To give a nurse 39 patients to take care of is mad. I do feel sorry for her

In the eight years I worked in skilled nursing I regularly had up to 40 patients myself it is absolutely unsafe and insane
