I think chatbots will certainly have their place, but won’t replace search engines completely. Here’s why:

First, search engines don’t just give us sites with information, they give us tools and features. The days of fun little websites are long gone and the days of web apps will keep going for the foreseeable future.

Second, chatbots are useful but not verifiable. Often, we’re not entirely sure where the information is coming from and if it’s free of errors. You still have to cite your sources, no matter the reliability of the chatbots.

Finally, chatbots are not a source of information, they just restructure it. Primary sources like journals and news agencies are still the primary sources of information.

I do want to be clear though, I’m not denying that search engines will change forever, I’m saying that they won’t go away in the foreseeable future. The web isn’t just information, it’s also function, and chatbots only provide the information piece.
