I am an Iraqi Arab. My great-grandfather, whom my father named me after (Abdullah), served in the Ottoman army. He first served in the Balkans, and after the Second Balkan War he received an injury in his right leg. He was a truly committed, patriotic, religious, and cultured man, even though he did not receive adequate education. He returned and participated in World War I when he heard that the British had landed their forces on the beaches of Basra. He volunteered again in the Ottoman army, but they rejected him because of his injury, as he was limping severely. Then he joined the irregular Arab tribal forces. He was martyred in the Battle of the Siege of Kut. At that time, he had two sons and two daughters. One of them was my grandfather, who was only one year old when the Ottoman Empire entered the war. This is what my great-grandmother told my father when he was young, and she was in her eighties.

Whenever I hear people here in germany rant about turks I just think of how germans and turkish fought side by side in these lands and the turkish fight for independence after losing ww1.... I know it all happened a long time ago but this should be remembered in germany also since so many turks live in germany we should all have learned from this .... I know enough turkish people and I am ashamed about the prejudices, lack of acceptance and more which are separating us all. Greetings from Germany!
