Interesting… what I got from Jefferson’s quote was ‘look for what others have done before you… learn from others’ mistakes. See which handle is smooth, meaning, this is the one most everyone before you has figured out is the best one to use. Be smart. Don’t just grab whatever “handle” is in front of you. Yes, like Ryan said, look for one that can support the weight, but the smooth reference, imho, is to the fact that many before have tried and deemed this one the one that can do the job. Look for that, that’s how you’ll know.
Of course, it’s all a metaphor for life but I feel that was more the point he was trying to make.

Going the easy route works, but also finding what is broken and fixing it, what is wrong and righting it - is harder- but worthy.

You make a good point here. One other way to look at this is that the smooth handle is the better tool, better way to do things. The smooth handle is attached to the most effective tool. This tool was used the most and polished by labor.

The smooth handle is smooth for a reason. If something is used regularly it will wear down the rough edges

Heavy handle all the way 😤, stay on that grind

Isn’t the smooth handle the one that’s been well used over the years?

Close. The smooth handle was a reference to the handle that was used the most as it would be smoothed down over time with use. When looking for where to go, see where people have already gone.

I was such a pessimist and learned to be actively optimistic in therapy, life is so much easier 😌

Is the time and a place for everything most of the time I apply these things even though what I do in real life involves a lot of that not blaming but getting to what is troubling people and doing something about it that is who I am at my core.

As the old timers say in Morocco, don't lift it from where it's heavy .

Excellent quotation from Thomas Jefferson. I can see this point very clearly, although I noticed by the comments that some of your listeners don't quite get it. And I think the reason why is that handles don't bear wait. Jefferson may have had in his mind a device with a handle that does bear weight. Maybe something from the farm.

"Take the shortest route, the one that nature planned -- to speak and act in the healthiest way. Do that, and be free of pain and stress, free of all calculation and pretension" - Marcus Aurelius

He’s right cause our natural tendencies is to bish and moan when our egos are hurt whilst resentment can be relentless.

This reminds me of the saying, "don't swat a fly with a sledgehammer." In other words, use the tool that will still get the job done, but with the least amount of effort.

I think of it as don’t grab the axe/sharp handle.
