Workflow Hacks For Quicker Mixes In Headphones AND Speakers (Windows & Mac)

My Interchangeable MIx Workflow For Portable and Fixed Setups (Windows & Mac)

My name is Paul Third and I am a Scottish youtuber / audio engineer / mixing engineer / audio geek. I mostly cover audio engineering related content ranging from audio plugin shootouts / plugin comparisons (acustica audio plugins, universal audio etc etc) to actual analog vs digital / gear vs plugins plugin tests via access analog and mix analog. I even include ddmf plugindoctor tutorials in my plugin reviews so you can be your very own plugin tester and experiment and understand whats actually going on under the hood.

All of my content is produced in Presonus studio one 6 which is my main daw and in terms of my audio interface I record and monitor through a universal audio apollo x6 through topping dx7 pro+ dac/amp and use a Lauten Atlantis for all of my voice overs.

Studio One is one of the best DAWs on the market (of course this is very relative hehe) but you are well served. You made a great choice. I just don't like their Mackie protocols. Very limited compared to Cubase for example. I had some problems using my UF8 controller. Other than that it is a wonderful DAW. Congratulations on the studio and the workflow, it was really awesome.

let me chime in on the back-up thing before I forget it: AUTOMATED backups are the way. Trust me. I do duplicati automated and macrium reflect automated. While duplicati focusses on selected folders that it backs up (daily), macrium reflect focusses on full (monthly) (and incremental (daily)) back-ups of my (big) SSD drives. Adopted that strategy from a guy who does this professionally for clients.

17:25 Hi Paul, for plugin control, I just ordered the Nektar Panorama CS12 - works with Cubase / Nuendo and Logic Pro (I had a P1 but it's too finicky and deep, and no motorized fader) - this one just has nice simple scripts that assign 12 rotary encoders + 4 switches to the most important parameters, and it's color coded. So they actually managed to map Q3 nodes to the knobs, a nice touch.

2:20 Intel are not the best choice for Windows based systems any more. Outside of specific workflows / tasks, if you want a desktop, laptop or mini PC for a Windows or Linux based DAW, you should be choosing AMD Ryzen CPUs.

Stream deck with macros in studio one is amazing.

That's a lot of monitoring options. It would drive me absolutely nuts. You're probably able to squeeze an extra 10-20% "universal translation" out of it for now, but my humble prediction is that this percentage will significantly decrease over time (<5%). Respect for not getting overwhelmed. The switching between mac and pc may sound like a hustle for many, but the fact of the matter is that you can also share sessions with people from both systems confidently. Again, I'll make a humble prediction that this will turn out to be an upside - I'd communicate this upside with clients. Talent is not the same now, they have their own understanding of sound-engineering and offering them the option to sit with a session and showing you what they want, instead of telling you what they want, can be the difference between: "I respect and love his work, but I'm not getting what I want." to "Can't work with another." Happy New Year!

i tell to the audiophiles "you are obsolete, you should open the song into a daw and apply plugins in order to modify each song to match your taste rather than keep buying expensive equipment"
a one size fits all is using twice the waves C6 sidechain stereo. that is a super easy way to improve any song in few seconds.

Anything special for mono compatibility?

I don't use 2 seperate Computers any more. MacBook Pro for everything. Plenty of power in all situations, one cable and the studio is running.
