ABOUT THE MOVIE
Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins “Turning Red releases on March 11, 2022.

According to “Turning Red” director Domee Shi, if you set a 13-year-old girl’s coming-of-age story in the early 2000s, it’s pretty much mandatory to include a boy band. “We needed our character Mei to be obsessed with something that her mom would not approve of,” said Shi. “Boy bands were the first step into the world of boys for a lot of girls that age. The guys were all super pretty, polished, soft and loving, and they had of way of bringing girls and their besties together. Plus, I thought it’d be really cool to create an animated boy band.”

Joining previously announced Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh, who lend their voices to Mei and her mother Ming, are Orion Lee as the voice of Mei’s dad, Jin, and Wai Ching Ho as the voice of Grandma. Mei’s tightknit group of friends are voiced by Ava Morse as Miriam, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Priya, and Hyein Park as Abby. Tristan Allerick Chen voices classmate Tyler, and Addie Chandler lends his voice to Mei’s secret crush Devon. Providing the harmonious voices of the members of 4*Town are Jordan Fisher, Grayson Villanueva, Josh Levi, Topher Ngo and Finneas O’Connell. Rounding out the voice cast are James Hong, Lori Tan Chinn, Lillian Lim, Mia Tagano, Sherry Cola, Sasha Roiz and Lily Sanfelippo.

There’s the bit where Jin’s cooking and all the close ups look like Studio Ghibli’s cooking! It really reminded me of that!

Mei also gives me strong Sailormoon vibes because of her red jacket and blue skirt, her leap in the sky in front of the moon 🌙 her friends wear single colors too similar to the other scout’s, not to mention all the transformations Mei is in and out of

i've noticed pixar movies are going into a new age of stories that are extremely personal to the people making the films. they may get more likely to be unrelateable to most but will still tell amazing stories which some can extremely relate to. i actually like the new age of pixar with the experimentation of art style and willingness to delve into topics that some people think younger kids shouldn't talk about (LGBTQ+ in Luca and female puberty in Turning Red).

The dad is literally the best character, he gives want her daughter wants and joins her in some occasions

I believe that 4 is an unlucky number because in Chinese, 4 is 四,pronounced as "si", which is also the same pronunciation to the word 死 (die)

I just noticed Miriam’s whole skateboard is a tribute to toy story! It has the lightyear symbol right under it and the skull from Sid’s iconic shirt 😱😱

There are a lot of Sailor Moon Referencer as well. Specially when the grandma and the aunties assemble to free their pandas!

From the "Awooga" clip you included, the foot thumping could be a shout-out to Thumper from Bambi.
From the birthday party scene, when Mei was giving rides, I thought of the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro.

That red decoration on the wall is not really a reference but more of a general cultural thing. Upside down character for "luck" is kind of like hanging a horse hoof on the wall.

As a torontonian (how we call "people from Toronto"), it made me really really happy to know that FINALLY a Disney movie was made in my own city and country! Haha, I screamed basically when I kept on seeing the streetcars and the appearance of the timbits box!

Also how ironic, I'm eating a box of timbits right now.

The unicorn sticker could be from the unicorn in Inside Out or Gravity Falls or an inspiration from Lisa Frank’s rainbow animals ☺️

Miriam being a Canadian, tomboyish sk8er girl who is seen singing has to be a nod to early 00’s Avril Lavigne

You forgot the one when the guy held up the sword and lights up it closely resembles Thundercats.

I loved the film. The relationship with her mom and between mom and grandma - so deep. Very good story telling. I loved that they didn’t go the usual route of Mei being ashamed or ridiculed for her panda and instead all the kids loved it! But then again, this is set in Canada, where it seems their default is politeness and enthusiasm. Lol.

This movie was good and story was amazing! Even though I’m not a 13 year old girl, I think anyone could relate to the message. Plus the animation style is so nice!

I FOUND A INSIDE OUT REFERENCE. I SAW RILEY MULTIPLE TIMES.

You can see her first when Mei was on the run as a panda in school. She run towards the bathroom. 2 kids there's one with the trumpet that falls to the other kid. Which is a female with short hair and blonde. Kinda look like Riley from inside out..I know this because I recognize that signature look of her..

The second one. I forgot.. but I do remember what part of the movie... I guess her second appearance was when Mei doing a little business in her school...she was the one who shove Tyler at the side....when his on the line.
