Ricky Syers performed his original song "Every Day Is Doris Day in Washington Square Park" at the memorial for Greenwich Village activist Doris Diether in the park on Sat., Oct. 23. As he sang, he had the "Little Doris" marionette dance along with him. Syers has made marionettes of some of the landmark Village park's denizens, including Diether and Larry "The Pigeon Man," among others. Diether died on Sept. 16 at age 92. She was New York City's longest serving community board member and was an ally of Jane Jacobs in fighting against Robert Moses's development and highway schemes that would have devastated the Village in the 1950s and '60s. She lived right off the park for decades and visited it nearly every day. (Video courtesy Ricky Syers)
