I'm not going to lie, as an American I really love seeing more woodworking traditions outside of the English and Japanese tool sets. There's a whole lot of cool stuff that doesnt originate from those islands.

I think those wooden backpacks deserve a deep dive!

I am learning woodworking in China. These days it's a hybrid of western, japanese and chinese style woodworking taught in class. it's quite fascinating to see old Stanley planes working side by side with japanese and chinese handplanes.

There's something really appealing about working with a minimal set of tools. My wife's grandmother is Cantonese and loves watching Chinese carpentry videos on TV. I'll definitely be looking out for these techniques next time I'm over her place. Too bad we don't speak the same language, otherwise I'd talk about woodworking with her! I'll have to pick up the Cantonese woodworking terminology while I learn the language.

Rex never missed an opportunity to hammer stuff into his benches and that's great. I need the reminder not to be so precious when I feel protective of my most expensive possession.

Chinese have been doing fine woodworking for about 4000+ years, no surprise they have figured out some nifty techniques and tools.

I have seen Chinese carpenters using clamping straps to hold large boards. They place it in the middle of the bench, hugging the board. Because it is a strap instead of a rope, it has more contact surface and to plan long slats, they press the strap with their knee instead of their foot. This allows them to have a lower position and in the middle of the work bench. Excellent video. Greetings from Spain

i love seeing you dive into traditional Chinese woodworking! i lived next to a farm in Taiwan for a bit and that guy's ability to just get stuff done without a ton of tools reminded me a lot of being a kid and seeing my grandpa work out of his one carry along toolbox. the farmer used a three legged variant of the bench. the work was done at the end with two legs. i wish i'd taken pictures.

A measuring device. Guess not.

So there you were demonstrating the side saddle mortising method. I thought it was silly and figured I’d straddle the bench. Then instantly, I thought, “What would happen when, not if, when that chisel slips?” Now I know where eunuchs come from! A moment later, you said exactly that.
Great video. Thanks.

I remember when that plane was closer to $15 when you recommended it originally. Was a great purchase.

Scarcity breeds creativity, it is interesting to see new ways to do things, especially when they require minimal resources 😊

Rex’s Chinese woodworking and yoga class 😂 This is cool content. Interesting to see different traditions since woodcraft is so ancient.

Femoral artery is more exposed in the straddling position for mortise cutting as well.

I really hope you make one of those tool kits and shop what's in it. I like many of your viewers don't have the means or desire to have a whole shop permanently set up. a kit that you can easily pull out for a project that is fully capable but still easy to store and transport is pretty great.

Rex, I’m so glad that you made this video! A couple years ago I saw a low resolution picture of a Chinese planing stop and I was really interested in how they were used, but I couldn’t find any information about them.
