That "voices" or "synth" sort of sound was a Mellotron. A primitive sampler kind of thing, but using a strip of magnetic tape for each key on the keyboard.

Mellotrons are very common in 70s prog rock. They usually have voice, strings, and flute sounds.

Some other famous songs that prominently feature the Mellotron: Nights In White Satin, Strawberry Fields Forever.

Wonderful! And somewhat in parts reminiscent of the Swedish band Änglagård. Maybe Far Corner was inspired by them (their debute is from 1992 and has been greatly acknowleshed in the prog community for it's originality and for pioneer work in bringing prog rock back to life).
