I used to work full time as a Sr. Front End Web Developer (I quit this job), & part-time as an adjunct professor teaching web development at a local university (I kept this job — I like teaching!). From Avalara: Some states, such as New York and Wisconsin, specifically exempt digital design services from sales tax as long as any work is delivered electronically.

I live outside the US, and for me in total Etsy takes about 17.5% tax from a $19.99 non-digital sale without adding sales tax.

I like to think about digital downloads as 100% profit

I think it's worth it! You're using a platform with free massive traffic you would otherwise have to find yourself. All my orders come from Etsy's search. I don't sell digital downloads but I think it's the smartest way to go, thinking of opening a second shop. Just price right, do the math, make sure you're getting the profit you want after you calculate fee deduction. Pretty simple 👍

I look at Etsys fee as my cost of sale for marketing.
