The deep scattering layer, also known as the sound scattering layer, is a stratum in the ocean that contains a variety of marine creatures. It was discovered using sonar, when ships uncovered a layer that dispersed the sound and was occasionally mistaken for the seafloor. As a result, it is also known as the false bottom or phantom bottom.
