Charter Act of 1833 :

1. Governor-general of Bengal was made Governor-general of India. Lord William Bentick became the 1st one.
2. The company’s monopoly in trade with China and in tea also ended.
3. The lease of 20 years to the company was further extended.
4. Complete centralisation – Financial, legislative and Administrative -The legislative powers of the Madras and Bombay government were taken away.
5. The Governor-General was given the power to superintend, control and direct all the civil & military affairs of the company.
6. Bengal, Madras, Bombay and all other territories were placed under complete control of the Governor-General.
7. All revenues were to be raised under the authority of the Governor-General who would have complete control over the expenditure too.
8. All restrictions on European immigration and the acquisition of property in India were Lifted. A way for colonisation.
9. A law member was to be added to the Governor-General council.
10. Administration would take steps to ameliorate the conditions of slaves and to ultimately abolish slavery.
