I love to use the phrase “it’s common but not normal” that way my clients don’t feel isolated or weird about something they are experiencing. Thank you for sharing helpful info for mamas!

ICE!!! I had to buy an ice machine to curb my craving for it. I ate ice like it was going out of style while pregnant. I cried when I couldn't eat ice at a family's house when they didn't have any for me to munch on. All this despite the fact that I was deathly afraid to break a tooth, so it had to be soft/snowy like ice. I drove my fiance nuts, especially when the ice machine would kick on at night and scare the s**t out of him 😂 of course I found out I was animic and was given iron pills, but even then, I still always hovered around that ice machine. I recently had to throw it out because it started growing mold. You served me well, ice machine ❤

I craved chalked, but found that a teaspoon of cornstarch would scratch the itch.

It’s not just anemia too. It can be associated with other mineral deficiencies like magnesium or calcium. My mom had an intense craving for matchsticks because she was unknowingly deficient in magnesium. She also chewed ice throughout her pregnancy and figured out it was due to an iron deficiency.

I craved dirt with my second pregnancy and it was most definitely anemia. I found one of the things that would satisfy my craving was raw broccoli. I ate so much broccoli that pregnancy 😂

The granddad of a friend of mine was suffering from dementia, which was also followed by pica. One night he slit open his mattress, pulled out the feathers and mixed them with water and flour to fry them in oil and eat them. It was wild.

I hate ice in drinks. I suddenly developed a craving for ice. Googled ice craving and asked for blood test for iron levels. Found out I had low iron levels. Once normal back to hating ice. Happened following surgery where I lost 2 pints of blood.

I craved meat to the point I was eyeing raw meat. My bloods were all fine, but my husband kept cooked meat in the fridge for me after I told him I nearly ate some raw sausages.

It's so normal in the south that you can buy a type of clay in gas stations. Preggo women buy it by the bag. It's just called white dirt and is actually farmed in south Georgia.

When I was pregnant and had a lot of vomiting just the acid, afterwards I was always craving crisps/chips because of the salt. And it makes sense, stomach acid is HCl and kitchen salt is NaCl.

I had this with my first and second pregnancies, only I had an overwhelming urge to eat carpet. I kept a carpet sample in my purse to smell and I’d vacuum a lot. I might have bit the sample once or twice, but never did eat it.

During my pregnancy with my daughter, I would crave the feeling of sand in teeth. I just wanted to chew it soooo bad. I couldn’t shake it. I mean If I even ride past a construction site and see dirt I would start chewing. I being watching nail videos just to see them dip into the acrylic 🥴. Eventually I started chewing activated charcoal- I would just stand in that mirror and crunch. I’d spit it out and brush my teeth. It was sooo satisfying! And yes I was severely anemic - nearly passed out one day- that’s when I was diagnosed.

My 2 year old daughter has pica. She does have iron deficient anemia and is also autistic. It's pretty exhausting. You already have to be obsessively attentive of choking hazards with small children, then on top of it you have to worry about walking into her bedroom and seeing her literally eating a hole in the drywall.

I used to have this insatiable need to chew ice when I was in high school and I still do it when i’m anxious. It’s not necessarily something non edible but it does cause some damage to my teeth unfortunately.

Pregnancy is so weird. I craved seafood with my first, but couldn't even watch a commercial about pizza without getting sick. Before I found out I was expecting my 3rd, I craved mojitos...and I wasn't even a drinker! 😅

I used to be a vet tech. It is also called Pica when a dogs or cat eats EVERYTHING in sight. Interesting it’s the same for humans!

Sometimes it just happens, especially in pregnancy, even if you’re not anemic. My mom wasn’t anemic and she had to eat crushed ice her entire pregnancy.

It was really fun for me as an 11 year old boy to get to use a mallet and smash the ice every single day. 😂
