I can see why the shamans had power, using this around the fires a thousand years ago. The wind blows, wolves howl, flock guardian dogs bark, and eagles screech. And then Dimash sings. A perfect storm. Love all the versions, but this one best of all. Thanks for the breakdown!

This is Dimash's Kazakh heritage, there are many more really great songs. I find it exciting precisely because it doesn't sound like our western music. "Samaltau" is very emotional and full of pain. The young man in this song does not go to war for his own country (which would be bad enough without question), he is forced to fight for Russia in the First World War. There were very high casualties among the Kazakh population, and you can hear that here. If you have a closer look at the history of Kazakhstan, you ultimately understand much better why they are now so proud of their independence and are doing everything they can to ensure that the country develops well.
Dimash belongs to the first generation to be born and grow up in an independent Kazakhstan, and you can feel his love for his country and his people in his Kazakh music. The songs in his mother tongue are special, and even if you don't understand a word of them, you can feel it. Most of these songs have a deeper meaning and the way they are sung is already different from the other stuff he usually does. This version here is impressive because of the presence of the Kazakh instruments right behind him, but musically, I also really like the version from the 2021 digital concert. It's one of those songs that immediately takes you out of the here and now and transports you somewhere else in space and time.

Dimash is an exceptional story teller. He is sitting, almost in a trance, as if he is feeling the same thoughts and feelings that the soldier must have had....
The wind, wolves howling, the soldier's state of mind, the feeling of getting dragged away from home to an unwanted war, are all represented in this beautiful song and simple video. 😊❤

В 1916 году идет первая мировая война. Русский царь издает указ о призыве на воинскую службу казахов 19-39 лет. "Самал тау"- песня тех призывников. Местность, откуда были призывники, называлась Самал- Тау (север Казахстана). Погибло 123 тысячи казахов в этой войне.
Впервые "Самал-Тау" Димаш исполнил в октябре 2019года в Китае на закрытии кинофестиваля "Шелковый путь". В 2020году(которая сейчас звучит) - на японском джазовом фестивале (запись студийная из-за пандемии короновируса). В январе 2021 года- на открытии по случаю инаугурации американского президента Джозефа Байдена. На это торжество он был приглашен представителями организации Sister International ( гендиректор отметил, что творчество Димаша объединяет людей, их культуры и языки).
Этой песни уже более 100лет и многие певцы исполняли её. Но именно Димаш заинтересовал слушателей, заставил задуматься над историей и смыслом. Как Димаш отмечает, что в музыкальном плане -песня несложная, но исполнять трудно её в моральном смысле.
Кобыз-казахский священный инструмент. Как отмечают казахи, звучание кобыза способно исцелять души и, даже-менять судьбу человека. Простые люди даже прикасаться к нему боятся. Нужно иметь чистую душу и светлые помыслы.

5 апреля в Актау(Казахстан) прошел гала-концерт, посвященный тюркоязычной культуре( Казахстан, Кыргыстан, Турция, Туркмения...). И, конечно, выступление Димаша было встречено шквалом оваций, такой эмоциональной энергией!!! Это незабываемая феерия, фантастическое Присутствовали более 100 тысяч !! Один парень четыре часа сидел на дереве, смотрел и слушал этот концерт. Вот это любовь народная! Браво!Кстати, концерт был бесплатный!!! Димаш настоящий патриот своей страны, без лжи и лицемерия.Концерты на Родине всегда отличаются невероятной эмоциональностью и радостью.

The musical instrument is from Kazajistán and name KOBIZ of two strings, Using folk arrangements like “SYBYZGI”, beautiful Kazakh wind instrument. This live performance with his instrumentalists friends is a firm favourite of mine. His live singing is impeccable like always, even sitting cross legged on a piano stool. Streamed from his home, his music room it wen down a storm at his first appearance at the Tokio Jazz Festival although he was disappointed when it was canceled he was overjoyed when they decided to livestream it. This song for me is all about pain. For Kazakh people, one friend told me, it was very humiliating to go to battle on foot, , not on horses as Kazakh warriors do. 😢
And Dimash once said that this one is one of the hardest song for him to sing emotionally because it talks about the suffering of his people.😢
