These alternate endings were part of an event where you could call in or vote online on the ending for the episode. SpongeBob’s ending was the one that won and is used to this very day.

The Dutchman actually CHEATED in Squidward's ending. Squidward wished that he never met the barnacle heads, but the Dutchman made it that Spongebob ans Patrick never met him.

I would've thought Patrick's would be funnier if the Flying Dutchman starts eating them, but then spits them out right after because he dislikes the taste of the gum.
I also thought Squidward's would've been funnier if The Flying Dutchman was annoyed by SpongeBob and Patrick introducing to Squidward after he ate them. Then he gets annoyed enough to let them out of him and send them back home, knowing that having to hear them talking about trivial things for all eternity would've been very insufferable him, telling them they're Squid's problem.
