It gets worse. On the Japanese front their soldiers and sailors - and leadership - were greatly demoralized when they learned the US had *three* ships (barges, actually) that had the sole function of running around making and delivering *ice cream* to other ships too small to make their own, or to Marines ashore. Each could produce over 500 gallons of ice cream a day and stored 1, 500 gallons. They also carried 1, 500 tons of frozen meat, 500 tons of *fresh* vegetables, fresh eggs, cheese and cold non-powdered *milk* -- all for the specific purpose of raising morale by breaking the monotony of eating rations every day. Here were the Japanese severely rationing literally everything and sugar a totally unheard of dream for a deployed soldier or sailor... and the Americans have not one not two but three ships *just to make ice cream*

Colonel Hessler: Look, General, a chocolate cake. Do you realize what this means?
General Kohler: Yes. Bring out the plates, silverware, glasses, and milk.

The sad part of this scene is that someone was nice enough to send a yummy cake from Boston and no one even ate some.

Amateurs talk tactics professionals talk logistics is probably my most favorite quote.

This really happened but in a different way, when a German officer saw a cake from Boston he said: “the Americans have fuel to fly cake across the Atlantic and we can’t even get a kart of fuel, the war is truly lost!”

I believe that this was taken from an actual incident. A group of German soldiers cut off from their unit and behind allied lines in France 1944, saw a lone American supply truck. The Germans shot the driver and discovered they had captured a mail truck. Among the parcels and letters, there was a chocolate cake mailed from the east course of the USA. The Germans concluded that Germany was losing the war seeing how cake could be easily transported to the battlefield wear as the the Germans were lucky to get food and ammunition for themselves.

And on the material side, this from the commander of the German defense of Aachen: "When the Americans start using 155s as sniper weapons, it's time to give up."

Neither Japan nor Germany had any idea of the size and scope of the American industrial base and its population. the US was so economically powerful, whichever side it entered on would win...given enough time. Declaring war on the US was Hitler's greatest mistake, next to attacking the Soviet Union.

I love that scene, a cake speaks a thousand words

I consider the industrial and agricultural production and logistics of WWII to be the US's greatest triumph in it's history.

The logistical operation backed by a truly colossal industrial manufacturing muscle was simply staggering. The Axis really were fighting a monster. The Germans had some amazing weapons and the allies a lot of mediocre equipment, but the allies were simply prepared to pour in as many guns, tanks, planes and men as necessarily to win. Ship building alone was ridiculous - every ship yard running 24/7 pumping out new ships - a totally mobilized economy.

Meinrad von Lauchert (29 August 1905 – 4 December 1987) was a German general and inspiration for the fictitious "Hessler" the war, he served as a military advisor for the 1965 Hollywood movie, "Battle of the Bulge" and was acknowledged in the film's opening credits.

This is my favorite scene. Quint knew it was over.

"So, 1100 men go into the water. 100 came out. Sharks took the rest. But at least we delivered the cake."

Robert Shaw died before the comic con surge, but I wonder if he had an autograph table how many people would ask him to sign a chocolate cake.

That is not the correct conclusion to draw. The fact that the US had spare fuel and space to send luxury goods across the Atlantic to troops during the middle of a World War says a lot more. The Germans were siphoning fuel from captured vehicles at this point, the Americans were literally burying them under their logistical might. You weren't going to break the US military's morale with even a single victory, let alone push the Americans, French, and British back across France.

I think of this scene whenever Ibsee boston cream pie and I yell at the store clerks saying "You have this cake...do you know what this means!?". When they ask me what it means, I walk away saying nothing.

the fact they used lots of real uniforms in the movies of that time breaks my heart
it also makes me wonder how many originals sit in some holliwood warehouse forgotten or thought to be reproductions

Why he got an SS Jacket and he is a colonel from the Wehrmacht?

It seems efforts to demoralize an enemy always have the opposite effect. I think the Russian approach is more practical: we don't care what you think, we will simply prevent you from doing anything about it.
