Thanassis Vassilopoulos C.V. Thanassis was born in 1972. His involvement with music started at the age of four. At the age of five he started learning how to play the clarinet. Since he was nine years old he started playing accompanying his father and other folk musicians and singers to the all known to us Folk Festivals. In 1987 he takes his first steps into the Greek Discography. From that time to today he has had collaborations with almost all the Greek Artists in recordings and also in live performances throughout Greece and abroad. He has also participated in the album of Joe Bonamassa with the title “Black Rock” produced by Kevin Shirley. In the same album the big Jazz Blues legend B.B King had also had participation!!! Thanassis performed as a special guest in the concert of Joe Bonamassa in Monteux Switzerland in the historical room “Miles Davis”. As a soloist he has been involved with Byzantine music and has participated at presentations/concerts of the “Athens Byzantine Orchestra” which were curetted by the composer, musicologist, and researcher George Lykouras. Recently Thanassis Vassilopoulos participated as a special guest on concerts of the known Turkish Singer Sila in the open theater “Harbiye” in Constantinople. He also has participations in many albums of well known Turkish singers such as Sila, Ziynet Sali and many others. In December 2015 he performed in Constantinople with the great Turkish singer Kibariye together with some of the most important soloists of Turkey. In December of 2015 was also the release of the collection “Rereading Mikis Theodorakis” («Ξαναδιαβάζοντας τον Μίκη Θεοδωράκη») with remakes of the great Greek composer. In this release Thanassis participates as a soloist revising Miki’s song “Paola” («Πάολα») from Costas Gavra’s movie “State of Siege” («Κατάσταση Πολιορκίας»). He created “Atractos Band” in May 2017 and with the involvement of a dj, he blended the sound of traditional musical instruments (clarinet, ney, laouto, violin, qanun, mizmar and duduk) with minimal house. The band played songs from Greece and around the world, combining the sound of the East and West. He gave 20 performances with this project, known as “Mykonos Project”, at the world-renowned club, Scorpios, in Mykonos. “Mykonos Project” became the talk of the island, with thousands of avid spectators in every performance. Thanassis has recorded and released four personal albums. The fourth and last album was released recently by Minos EMI/ Universal titled “Atractos” and the music was written by the great Greek composer Vangelis Papathanassiou. Thanassis from his first music steps as a soloist came in contact with the traditional music of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East cultures. This music touched/inspired him and he started studying traditional wind instruments such as: “Ney”,” Mizmar”, Flutes and other wind instruments and after years of research and practice he approached these instruments in depth. In the resend years he has turned his interest to the combination of the traditional/folk execution with the symphonic Orchestra execution.
