Not to pick on you especially but are these really nymphs or are we fishing micro-fry patterns that tolerate a little drag once in a while which makes it look like a fry that is trying to swim to get out of the current? Think of how many bites we get on the swing or lift.

I just don't find nymphs with hot spots or pink heads that look more like fry with yolk sacs or a flash of red gills etc.

Just trying to have an honest intellectual conversation which may be pointless as they just work!

I have a golden stonefly jig pattern that uses yellow biots for the body, tail and legs, fine gold wire, hare’s ear and a segmented pheasant tail wingcase which I think more than anything is just fun to tie! I tie it in size 14 with a 3.8mm bead and just enjoy tying it because it looks so damn good, not to mention how effective it is. I also use an american granom caddis pattern with a cdl tail, black crystalflash body (coated heavily with nail polish), peacock eye ice dub thorax and orange thread hotspot on a copper bead 2.5mm on size 16-18, the theory is the black crystalflash is translucent enough to hint at segmentation and as it gets chewed up the orange thread peaks through making it look even more delicious, and it just sinks like a stone. For spring, this fly is so productive, always catch multiple 20”+ trout on it! I also tie up some pheasant tail brown duracells in size 16 and 18 on a copper bead, the new zealanders in rotorua put me on that one. and just a few sexy walt’s worms in a variety of colors because it is so easy to change the colors with just a different dubbing or bead. Frenchies come and go as well.

We all different experiences and our own list of “confidence” flies. I only fish around 7 patterns too but with different variations in several different weights. I try a few new patterns each year but rarely does one make into my main fly box. I fish with my son 80% of the time and we fish all over the northwest and his go to patterns are completely different than mine. I believe there are probably thousands of patterns that are super effective but I fish what I fish because they catch fish and they are fast and easy to tie. I have never had any luck with Perdigons for example but the blowtorch is a top fly for me.

1. Frenchie
2. Blowtorch
3. Pink bead pheasant tail
4. Olive caddis larvae
5. Duracell
6. Blue perdigon w pink hot spot
7. Olive perdigon

Yeah....can't argue with those. I never fished a blue perdigon.

I do like a brown perdigon with gold wire rib and bead and orange hotspot.
