‘The chisel marks lead you a certain way. They create another idea. Your eye slides up the sculpture.’ Thaddeus Mosley has been working in sculpture since the 1950s, beginning with scrap wood found locally in Pittsburgh.

Encounters with African tribal art and visits to what Mosley calls the ‘University of Carnegie Museum’ honed his approach. Now, working largely in cherry and apple, Mosley is guided by ‘the definition and colours of the wood’, and starts to chisel without making models. He describes this rhythmic process as one of subtraction and addition.

Thaddeus Mosley is presented by Karma as part of the ’Studio’ section at Frieze Masters 2024. The section sees ten immersive presentations — focusing on artists’ place of making, reflecting the idea of the past informing the present moment of creation.
