Snap: Linux's Most Controversial Universal Packaging System

Recently I discussed AppImage's on this channel which I'm sort of a fan of so I thought why not also talk about Snap packages which I think it would be fair to describe as the most controversial universal packaging systems that exist on Linux. This has gone so far to the point where some distros such as Linux Mint have disabled support for them out of the box due to some issues involving the Chromium package.

"So whats the deal with snaps ?" *seinfeld theme plays*

I prefer flatpaks. Snaps seem fundamentally broken and a proprietary store is a total deal breaker.

A fair assessment of pros and cons of Snaps. I am impressed with your fair-minded and quite well thought-out commentary. Very good content. Being new, quite impressed. Glad I subbed.

I really enjoyed this video. The technical elements in it were really informative. Thumbs up!

What about flatpaks? Should we use them? How do they compare to AppImages and Snaps?

I really like your approach and attention to part subjective and objective things to different parts in your videos. Thank you for the great content and detailed explanation.

its more than newer application become more easily available as opposed to waiting untill they land in the standard repos

Since when does "seeing a bunch of loop devices" equate to "messing up your file-system"? Even with NO snapd installation, imagine a Redhat or Arch Linux server, running hundreds of containers. I think you would see hundreds of different loop devices. I imagine there are ways to omit the displayed output from such devices, if that's your preference.

I had stopped using Linux. But after hearing about snaps on this video, I'll go back to it.

Installing apps and all their dependencies was the biggest pain in the neck on Linux, that's what drive be back to windows & macos

My fierce dislike for snaps was when I uninstalled one trivial snap, without my knowledge it uninstalled a part of my desktop environment after which I couldn't use it any more.

automatic updates aren't a security flaw, quite the opposite.
furthermore the snap package manager can revert a faulty update.
the cherry on top is that there's a channel system to ensure the stability of well, the stable channel

Break out snaps' sandbox? So many snaps just demand a "classic" (non-sandboxed) install anyway.

the issue with x11 is with x11 really as x11 is technically a security nightmare
wayland ain't ready yet tho

Hate Hate Hate Hate Hate Snaps. No thank you. Nothing good about Snaps. I don't need my apps to open very slowly. Seriously, a calculator app should not take 30 to 40 seconds to open. Totally dumb. I also don't need a monolithic company managing outdated snap apps over deb pkgs nor pushing them onto me whether I want them or not. Snaps are bad news.

I've tried the Discord Snap on 2 systems, on Manjaro, Pop_OS! and Fedora. Randomly, from time to time, it crashes, or just closes itself. I've tried this snap many times across the last 2 years. It plain SUCKS. Meanwhile installing discord from the Repo itself, like a normal program, works like a charm. WHY???!

Thank you, Brodie. Over the years Canonical has consistently both created and then abandoned different projects and directions and also attempted to have upstream follow its own "cadence" of releases to make things easier for them. I just do not trust the company any more.

Thank the lord Harry for that. (Whoever he is?) I really thought for a moment, you were going to say you love Snaps. Thank you for doing a better explanation of what Snaps actually are and do than what I could. 😄

It is all, who you want to give control about your security: Canonical or a potential Russian Hacker's web site with app images.
