Controlling Dynamic Loft // Malaska Golf

A Malaska Golf Member says he has improved how his right hand works through the ball. However, he wants to know why his dynamic loft has increased. The member’s dynamic loft has gone up 4 degrees, although he is not hooking the ball.

Static loft is when your club sits at a 90-degree angle to the ball. However, when most people hit the ball, there is a bit of forward shaft lean. Mike’s static loft at address is 50 degrees, but at impact, the clubface’s dynamic loft is 48 or even 46 degrees. Dynamic loft is the angle of approach of the clubface at impact.

The key is to monitor your right hand and keep your knuckles behind your wrists at impact. This will take the loft off the clubface. Therefore, you will add loft if your knuckles catch up with your wrist.

Once you start to feel this, you can lean the shaft backward to increase your dynamic loft more than your static loft, and the clubface won’t turn down. This means you can focus on the trajectory of the ball. With different lofts, the ball will carry different distances if you hit the ball straight.

Once you can get your right hand working correctly and you aren’t hitting pull hooks, it’s just monitoring where your knuckles are in relation to your wrists when you run the club into the ball.

I'm doing that Leadbetter GoodGoodGarret video backswing + Malaska's downswing + Releasing the club as Jack Niklaus tells us in Golf my way Downswing video. This 3 combinations has transformed my iron shots. These videos are pure gold. 👏👏👏.

This helps so much, I've also been concentrating on feeling that my thumb is on the hosel/heel of my club as I hit the ball . I can almost ignore the shaft separating me from the club head . Such a helpful thought, makes you feel so confident of the outcome . Thanks as always mike

Played today and it had to be my best all round ball striking game. The club face felt really square through impact for longer, I have changed to a much stronger grip over the last few months and this seems to really help. The ball flight is lower also. Thanks Mike my coach without knowing

excellent video as always...tried this today, but the timing was difficult, as a swing is so fast thru impact, I couldn't monitor where my angle of my right hand was at impact.

This is my biggest struggle. Every shot my club is leaning backwards and my dynamic loft is probably 10+ distance suffers and going way too high. I literally cannot control this and my clubhead insists on leaning backwards. Please try to do more on overcoming this I can do it slow, but the second I need to hit my club the distance it was designed for, all bets are off and I’m leaning the shaft backwards into impact. Please help me.

Thanks for the instruction, your grip ideas ("stronger left hand")have transformed my ball striking with irons. my tendency is to hit slightly straight left however but it feels so strong I don't want to change my grip back?
Driver still needs work!!

Interesting I came across this video, I'm very right-arm dominant and try very hard to get my carry distance to 250 carries with my Driver, having the same issue with the gentlemen you are helping, you mentioned delaying the Knuckles, is it best to have the V of your right-hand point directly to your nose at the address position to hold that position at impact to hold off the delay to help with dynamic loft.

Like said in the video increased dynamic loft isn't a bad thing. He could have been delofting too much before losing carry, and getting too much roll out on approach shots. There is also the question of how he's being measured, and if the device is in the exact same spot compared to where he is setup and swinging from.

Great video as always!

How can I take a lesson in person with you Mike?

I've seen you use that giant wedge (or something like it) in other videos about face control. Out of curiosity what is it called?

I do this and every shot I hit goes left. I starts offline to the left straight but a pull.
