Furiosa! Underperformed at the boxoffice, overperformed at my heart. Nuff said. Here's everything right with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga!

I have my own little win for this movie I’d like to share:
As an Australian, I was legitimately surprised to find that Jack’s actor, Tom Burke, is British. His Aus accent is so good that it actually fooled me into thinking he was an Australian actor. Which has never happened to me before. It’s usually very easy to spot a fake Aus accent because you can almost hear the actors overthinking it. But Tom in this movie is spot on!

“Do ya have it in ya to make it epic” might be my favorite line delivery of the year, hemsworth just killed it

6:11 My head canon for Demenetus is he's JUST sane enough to know how crazy he is. Every now and then he shows these looks of guilt or shame, like he knows he's being truly awful, but he's accepted that it HAS to happen. he needs to be the scariest guy to make everyone else follow him, so he has to do the worst things, even if deep, deep, deep down he knows that it's wrong.

something that i haven't been able to stop thinking about since I put it together, Dementus sculpted Furiosa into a creature defined by grief and rage so nonchalantly and so non-personally for so many years and even as he's dying he never even bothers to ask her what her name is

“Conquering the world on horseback is easy. Dismounting and governing, that is hard.”
-Genghis Khan.
This quote is Dementus in a nutshell.

21:59 I'm fairly certain the changing colors of Dementus's cape and overall outfit are meant to represent the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The first Horseman is Conquest, riding a white horse. Dementus begins the movie wearing white and we see him going around conquering and abducting smaller gangs in the Wasteland, all while also hunting for the Green Place in order to take it over. He's literally doing conquest.

The second Horseman is War, riding a red horse. When Dementus goes up against the Citadel he becomes Red Dementus, staining himself with the red flares. However, the Citadel proves to be a far more challenging foe for Dementus than he had planned, one who cannot simply be conquered. So he goes to war with the Citadel, sparking the Forty-Day Wasteland War.

The third Horseman is Famine, riding a black horse. After taking over Gastown, Dementus dons more black and becomes Dark Dementus. However, time and the war have dwindled his supplies, leaving him and what remaining men he has starved for resources. They're in famine.

The fourth and final Horseman is Death, rider of the pale horse. Once Furiosa finally captures Dementus, all of the other dyes and pigments he's used have been blown off by the desert winds, leaving his now graying hair painfully visible. The death comparisons become even more stark in the final shots of him with the peach tree growing out of him. Dementus's body is shriveled and emaciated, almost like a skeleton. He's not dead, being actively denied death and ironically used as sustenance for the tree's life, but he almost certainly would rather be.

All of this also makes the History Man's description of Furiosa as "The fifth Rider of the Apocalypse" feel a little more poignant.

if you look closely at what Dementus is eating, while his men are killing P Jack, you can see they are mushrooms, more than likely psychedelic mushrooms, kinda adds to the "I'm bored." line, the trip was over, he's so desensitized by all the killing he has to take hallucinogens just to enjoy with anything, and like a long time drug addict, he doesn't even feel the pleasure from either the killing or the shrooms, probably from anything. and he probably doesn't even miss it. to quote my favorite song "I don't even miss the pleasure I can longer feel"

Fun little detail that you (respectfully) missed: After the Bullet Farm ambush, Dementus has little cuts all over his face and arms from there the sharp edges of the brass shell casings cut him as they cascaded over him off the conveyor belt.

The problem with box offices these days is that Covid basically killed peoples drive to go to the theater, while streaming has killed the secondary revenue stream of DVD sales that could allow movies to do just OK at the box office as they new another paycheck was coming a few months later when dvd/blueray sales started

Cool detail

The rifle that furiosa's mum uses is missing its gas tube (it's normally semi auto), so the vuvalini converted it into a bolt action to keep it functioning

Something that i noticed that i havent seen anyone else discuss is the way that the movie echos moments from classical Myth. The death of Jack always makes me think of The Death of Hector from the Trojan War, where Achilles drags Hector's body around the walls of Troy. And Dementus' suffering reminds me of the punishment of Tantalus where in the underworld Tantalus is surrounded by abundance but cannot reach it. Specifically that the fruit grows above him but there is no way that Dementus can reach up to it.

23:35 fun fact when Dementus hops off the truck, the one guy he questioned while stringing up her arm sheaths his machete, and some people have taken it as he either cut it/let her cut it as Dementus’ control over his gang slowly waivers

I watched furiosa before I ever watched fury road, and I watched them back to back, and it's so funny to essentially see max show up in essentially her story, do some cool stuff, and leave

Consistent detail I love in this movie is how bad Dementus is at leading. Aside from the History Mans constant distaste for Dementus' ways, First after he gains rule over Gastown, it falls behind in production and the people are chaotic. His solution is to ask for MORE resources. Then the Octoboss leaves him. When Furiosa escapes Dementus, we can see Mr. Davidson sheathing his machete, implying he cut her down and helped her, then when Furiosa steals the car from Scrotus, in the background we can see Mr. Davidson cradling a dead Mr. Harley in his arms and we can assume he joined Joes side. Dementus tries to rule through pure fear and intimidation but he has nothing to offer but bloodshed and fighting. He is constantly being undermined by his own men but he either doesn't notice or doesn't care because, like you said, he's just trying to use bloodshed and pain to distract from his past. Max said it best in Fury Road. "If you don't try to fix what's broken. You'll go insane."

I'm so happy I got to see this in theaters. The deep rumbling growl of Dementus's biker army was so viscerally terrifying.

24:00 actually you can see mr harley sheathe his machette, because he actually cut off her arm. you can see throughout the movie that mr harley struggles with the whole kill-to-survive thing, or at least more than others. he doesnt want to shoot furiosa's mother so someone takes his rifle, he doesnt want to give up furiosa and the organic mechanic, and he wants to hurry the warboys along with refueling to make sure the chaos in gastown doesnt erupt any further than it has. also when he pulls furiosa and jack from the car wreck he still LETS them hold each other, all he does is have his hand barely on furiosa's shoulder.

I love how this movie characterizes Furiosa's journey to the Green Place. We see it through Furiosa's eyes, so audiences who have never watched Fury Road can connect with her challenges because her goals are sympathetic. Meanwhile, if you have watched Fury Road, it forces you to want better for Furiosa while tearing your heart out, and it works either way you watch it.

Can we also talk about just how much better this movie makes the already amazing Fury Road? When we finally watched it at home we IMMEDIATELY watched Fury Road again and back to back these movies are perfection.

Furiosa may not be Fury Road, but who the hell cares? It's an amazing movie in its own right and has one of the best takes on the "revenge is bad" trope.
