A number of Japanese gathered in front of the National Diet in Tokyo on Monday to protest against the country's bill to increase defense spending and express strong concerns and opposition to the country's frequent interaction with NATO.

Japan's military is only expanding due to China's military expansion. That tends to happen in these situations. I imagine Japan wouldn't want the economic burden if they thought they could avoid the need for it.
