The Nodding Syndrome has affected some 5,000 children in rural northern Uganda since 2007. The mysterious disease affects the brain and nervous system, and those affected display a sleepy appearance, have seizures, and lose contact with the world around them. Two centres were built, in Kitgum and Omoro districts to cater to the affected children. Today, these centres are closed. The non governmental organisation that started the centres pulled out, citing dwindling funds. However, government has not filled the gap, hence causing suffering to parents.
