I did Desert Shield/Storm. We had 6 carriers in the theatre by - having a carrier already in the region, extending the deployment of another, and by advancing the deployment of others.
We were all on station by the Feb 16, 1991 deadline.
USS Saratoga and Kennedy in the Red Sea….USS America, Midway, Ranger and Roosevelt in the Persian Gulf.
Flight ops in a confined area (Persian Gulf) with 4 carriers went as well as expected.
Kudos to all Strike Groups.

I’d say that with the second carrier, there will be a week or two to integrate it and its escorts. Any strike on Iran would probably be launched before the Truman and her escorts return home. It would make sense to use weapons including TLAM’s from those ships before they leave. Its deployment has been extended and I doubt they will keep her there very long. The B-2’s also can’t remain in Diego Garcia very long. The meetings this weekend might lead to a rapid escalation.

When I was in the Army and based in Hawaii we did interservice training with the Navy to practice flying from carriers for interoperability we flew to and from the Vinson for a couple of days with UH-60s.

Served on the Vinson for WESTPAC 1999. Can’t say that I loved circling around the Gulf for months, but still had some good times nonetheless. Worked on FA/18 weapons radar. Served on the Kittyhawk too. Watching the jets from vultures row never got old.
