THE definitive surfer is low key, adaptable to any situation and lets his waves do the talking. He usually rides around in a beater truck with no gas and no worries about how he's going to get home. Surf is first. There might be one or two at every beach around the world. One of Rincon's happens to be the one that broke the mold his dad made before him, a generational surfer from the roots of performance surfing. He became a World Champion despite his desire to hang out in the background like the most core of core. Tom Curren, surfer.

Tom is style, precision, and grace personified. No one has ever looked better on a wave. 🌊🤙

TC's style was really my all time favorite. A master of the craft who stayed true to himself into, through and beyond the pro circuit circus. Another awesome memory dislodger from the surf film master TR!

When I was a kid my friend and I rode our bikes to surf the cove at Rincon. We would wait for guys like Tom Curren or Shawn Thompson ETC. We would drop in in front of them for 1 second then kick out and say we surfed a wave with Tom Curren LOL. Tom lived right next door to my Friend and we were always afraid to talk to him. The place he is doing the talk interview is the spot we lived in Carpinteria.

He was my surfer Hero back, when I was a sophomore in high school in
1987. Best year of my Life.

Keeping in mind the evolution of the sport itself, and the type of board(s) he was riding back then andwhat's out there now (epxy computer shapes etc. ) . . . . pretty insane.
I'd never 'compare' Tom's surfing to any other surfer, becasue it's apples to oranges . . . I can appreciate all aspects of performance past and present.
But it is undeniable how far ahea he was in not only in talent, but style and ability . . . using almost every part of the wave.
Truly a pleasure to watch Tom surf.

That first segment....I watched that a million times back in the 80's, but can't recall what film it was in back then.

I remember Tom when he was probably around 6 or 7 years old, surfing at Hammond’s, SB. We were surprised he was there all by himself ! His parents must have known how capable he was, even at that age. He didn’t do anything fancy then, but his wave judgement was spot-on . Amazing .

We were coming back from a morning session at the Ventura Fairgrounds and stopped at Rincon to check it out. Didn't see him out there and when we were about to leave Curren came walking up the trail and was parked a couple spots from us. I seem to recall us thinking that the truck he was driving was one that he won in the OP Pro or something like that. I think it was said that at Rincon he gets whatever waves he wants. In that first wave of the video, it's funny when everyone else sees him and they all drop out.

Simon Andersson's Tri Fin and Curren combined and came into its own in the 80's! The Greatest of Times!

Legend. His attack the lip style unlocked so much for competitive surfing. The next generation took flight to keep up.

Tommy, probably the best "Soul Surfer" in history. No ego, that I could see. I met him once when I was living on the north shore in the '90's. He wanted to borrow bass guitar from my one of my roommates. Super down to earth

I remember watching the Stubbies finals at Oceanside. It is hard to believe they actually had contests there because it really is a crappy wave but those guys made it look good.
