Pretty sure he praised Grant. You know, the one from Ohio.

He was referring to Grant. This is just lazy journalism on Time's part. But I guess it makes for a more controversial video title and thus more clicks.

I wasn't aware that Robert E. Lee had a drinking problem, was from Ohio, and was chosen by President Lincoln to serve as General. History is so interesting.

Despite fighting for a messed up cause, Lee was a skilled general, that is fact. Trump was praising Grant for being able to beat Lee, because he was in Ohio, and Grant was from Ohio. He was stating fact, not praising Lee.

President Trump and General Lee are two of some of America’s greatest heroes.

He’s not lying, General Lee was a great general especially with the fact that he was greatly outnumbered in most battles he took part in but that didn’t stop him having some great victories against remarkable odds.

Posting this even after the retraction. Nice.

Like him or not. General Lee was a great general

Lee was a great general and almost fought for the Union, but couldn't fight against his home state of Virginia, which was not at all unusual. In those days, your state was where your primary allegiance was, the Union was a significantly more abstract concept that it is today. All of the high ranking officers on both sides knew each other and many fought side-by-side in the Mexican-American War and that included Lee and Grant. The orders that Lee issued at the end of the war, forbidding his troops to fight a guerrilla war, and the interaction between Grant and Lee at the end of the war, which resulted in the surrender document, were instrumental in allowing our country to survive such a destructive and bloody conflict. We are the only country that has survived a civil war of this magnitude and come out of it more-or-less intact. If it wasn't for the interaction between Grant and Lee, we might not have survived as a nation. Lee was also very much in favor or reconciliation between North and South and thought building monuments to the Confederacy was a bad idea. There was a lot more to R. E. Lee than the fact that he fought on the wrong side of the Civil War.

Here’s a reality check: dozens of influential people have praised the Confederates. Why do you think both the Allies and Axis powers were so successful in ground warfare during World War II? Because they studied and adapted the battle tactics and strategies of Confederates like Lee and Jackson. Same with the Gulf War, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf extensively studied Lee, Jackson, and Union Generals like Grant and Sherman, to allow the United States and United Kingdom tank divisions to outflank and outfight Saddam’s Republican Guard.

Trump is praising Lee for his combat skills, not his racial views.

Lee was a great general and so was Grant. Grant was not as skilled or charismatic as Lee but still won in the end. Easier to do with the amount of manpower and industry behind you as Grant had. Trump was correct that Lincoln was perplexed with all the Generals that were soundly beaten by Lee and against the advice of the general staff he moved Grant from the west and put him in command of the Army of the Potomac. The rest was history.

Fake news. He is praising Grant. General Lee was a skilled general.

Yes, Robert E. Lee was a great general, he was even respected in the North. What the Confederacy stood for was morally wrong, but Lee's talents on the battlefield cannot be denied.
