In his weekly clinical update, Dr. Griffin discusses current and past outbreaks of “vaccine” preventable diseases including whooping cough, polio and measles with your co-host Vincent Racaniello and the recent increase in norovirus outbreaks, if alcohol-based hand sanitizers aid in the spread of norovirus before reviewing the recent statistics on RSV, influenza and SARS-CoV-2 infections, the WasterwaterScan dashboard, where to find PEMGARDA, provides information for Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s long COVID treatment center, if “long COVID” like symptoms occurs after influenza and how long COVID may associate with neurological complicates that control verbal memory.

Sleuthing like a good infectious disease specialist should, to find the index case of the noro outbreak-well done. Thank you for another informative episode.

I missed the last Thanksgiving before COVID because my housemate got it the weekend before and I assumed I'd get and spread it to my family. I never had symptoms though. But I've since learned that there's a significant chance of asymptomatic infection so I probably did the right thing.

As always, a highly informative Clinical Update, thank you Dr. Griffin. I felt Vincent's response to the letter writer asking about the historical HPAI 50% fatality rate was a bit condescending. Even if it were 10%, or just 5%, that would be disastrous to societal functioning. The essential workforce would suffer the earliest and most significant losses, dramatically reduciing healthcare providers, emergency services, and the operation of critical infrastructure, like utilities and food supplies. It is in no one's interest to already be minimizing the potential that a HPAI pandemic will have on humanity. If the current nominees for US Public Health leadership are appointed, the government will not be competent enough to contain such a crisis.

It appears to be the glycerin in most hand sanitizers that prevents the alcohol from deactivating norovirus. Alcohol without glycerin is reasonably effective in deactivating norovirus but is overly drying to hands. Quaternary ammonium based hand sanitizers are better against norovirus. Bleach based cleaners are effective. So when traveling, consider bringing a collection of sanitizers!

My husband says LOTS of men don't wash their hands in public restrooms. I do my best to avoid shaking hands but if I do I am acutely aware of not touching my face until I can wash my hands. People are gross.

Maybe I am slow, but why is the WHO not stopping OPV right now? Why in 5 to 10 years? Is it a supply chain issue (i.e. not enough IPV supply is available)?

I just saw someone talking about Georgia stopping poultry sales because of H5N1

First cat of COVID. Took Novavax in early November. Took paxlovid within 8 hours of onset. Had a slight sore throat and tested positive. Only symptom was a slight sore throat and feeling "heavy" for the duration. Tested negative on day 9. Never would have known i had COVID without the test. Never felt sick. Early paxlovid result? Also did infrared light 30 min per day and was on daily NAC, zinc and D3.

Daniel: She (NYT reporter) should have called you.

Vincent: She did. But she still got some things wrong!

I love these guys so much!

30:00 Many countries don't need prescription for antibiotics too but resistance is the concern. We need cheap and widely available RAT kit.

17:48 I hate hand sanitizer—to me it feels exactly the way Dr. Griffin describes it—putting something on top of hand dirt
However, I’ve always wondered about antibacterial WIPES? Are they better/closer to using soap and water?
What about the hand cleaning goo that mechanics use? You rub the goo all over your hands, then wipe it off on a towel? Is that as effective as soap and water?

Thank you both for all you do to maintain credible science information and communication. I hope all goes well with your new government administration, but I’m quite skeptical.
