2024 Nissan X Trail e-Power (hybrid) review

In this review, I'll tell you why I'm struggling to like the new Nissan X-Trail.

In particular, I'll cover off why I think the X-Trail hybrid model, the new 2024 Nissan X-Trail e-Power, doesn't make a lot of sense.

It's not like other hybrids, it still needs petrol even though it drives as an EV electric SUV, and it's not as fuel efficient or fun as it should be.

I can understand that there's value on offer here, but I couldn't recommend it over a Toyota RAV4 hybrid, Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V hybrid, or a GWM Haval H6 hybrid.

Watch, and you'll see why.

I drove one of these the other day and was very impressed with it. Never having driven an EV before I was expecting it to be a learning process but it felt natural straight away and I loved the braking off throttle. It was super quiet, punchy and had good steering and suspension.
My current cars are a 370Z and an i20N so to stack up well against those was unexpected.

The engine usually runs about 2, 200rpm in normal driving and you can't hear it. When you give it some stick it goes to 4, 400rpm and you can hear it but it certainly doesn't sound like a lawnmower engine, it's very simliar to the GR Yaris engine but lower revving with less boost. I thought hearing it while accelerating hard was a plus because you get the best of both worlds.

To be honest I thought you were very biased and this novel drive train is class leading and a revelation.

I took delivery of an X-Trail Ti-L e-Power back in August. I was looking for an electrified mid size suv and something not made in China. That scratched most EVs off the list and the Korean twins were out of my price range. I was also looking for specific features like memory seats and adaptive high beams. The Mitsu PHEV fit but was too expensive.

Enter the X-Trail Ti-L e-Power. It had all the features i was after and just within my budget. I would say that in this trim level, it is very luxurious inside, like on par with Lexus or BMW. It has excellent sound insulation to keep things quiet inside, and the e-motors just add to the experience. It's a bonus that the car is hot hatch quick (check the carwow review). Ride is good enough for my family. Jack of all trades, master of none. I'm very happy with the purchase, much better than a RAV4 or even the new CR-V.

I don't believe the current generation RAV4 hybrid is the class leader any more. It may have been when it was first released but others have caught up and gone past it. I test drove an X-Trail Ti-L e-Power in March 2023 and was blown away by its very low NVH levels, acceleration and creature comforts. Like most reviewers have stated, the engine is barely perceptible when it kicks in. To compare it to a lawnmower engine is ridiculous. Suggesting a Mitsubishi Outlander might be a better choice is very puzzling when the hybrid version is $13, 000 more expensive. I've probably read over 40 reviews of the X-Trail e-Power from Australia, Canada, USA, Europe and Britain and the overwhelming view is that it is a very good car.

I’ve had my Xtrail Ti for about 6 months now. I like the ePower system, driving like an EV that doesn’t need to plug in. Plenty of performance for a family SUV. Nice ride quality. Fuel consumption is about half my old Subaru Forrester. No regrets at all for choosing the Xtrail.

Wow...not a single word of appreciation or positive statements towards the car. Not mentioning built quality and premium material used.. no words about double gazed glass installed and noise cancallation featute for driving environment.. not mentioning about the practically or space that the cabin provided..wow just 1 way traffic for a car review. 😂

I received delivery of a top spec X-Trail in September, previously I bought new Mercs GLC and GLE diesel SUV`s. Luxury, build quality, comfort and tech are on par, acceleration and drivability is not noticeably much different (I don`t tend to push the car hard) however, more importantly value for money is far superior as I feel you get a lot of car for a fraction of the cost. The only other vehicle that came close was the Mazda CX 60 but the price of the Nissan pipped it for me.

First negative review of the New X-trail ive seen. it's the best suv in the price range for me and can come with 7 seats for a little extra. the Rav 4 is out dated and the Nissan just drives better in all conditions in my opinion on and off the road and it's quick with a 0-60mph in the low 7's. think this guy just doesn't like X-Trails 😄but he's entitled to his opinion

I have been an owner for the X-trail Epower since October and I was quite inpressed with the vehicle (as well as Nissan), as a pervious owner of a Landover Discovery Sport SE, I found the X-trail has better seats (very comfortable); Slightly narrow cabin but still comfortable; A slightly Lower Power but very Torquey (Torque wins on street as I believe); Very practical make sense interior and control (don't like the left steering wheel control but I can turn off on the Active-system if I wanted). The most impressive is their E-4Force 4WD system as it makes the car concern pretty well for the SUV. I have been running my x-trail on some occasions can outrun most Petrol cars. And in rain I think it handles a lot better than the Teslas (Model 3, Models). I guess the bottom line is how you will like to use your car and it has ticked all the checkmark when I was shoppting (7 seater, simple design, can be abused with less worry, no worry about range anxiety when I can top up in 5min?). Just my 2cents. :)

Agree - X Trail E Force is a wonderful drive, quiet and responsive. Well finished and equipped. I am very impressed by my brother's Ti - better value than the TiL or 2 wd Qashqai TiL.

Your review is completely false.
I don’t believe it.
Looks like you are a hater of Nissan 😂😂

I bought two of epower variant for our company. I normally drive a M550i BMW. The x trail epower is surprisingly easy to drive fast around corners quickly. And handles lot of tight roads as well as my Bimmer. Also visibility is good, and not too much blind spot. It is an easy daily driver and car for going to shopping centre.

has the potential to be better than the rav4 but its just not fuel efficient enough. great concept though and bonus marks for thinking outside the box. a bit more development and this could be a winner.

Hi Matt - really enjoy your reviews and have been watching all your uploads around medium SUV’s and would like to see one on the Škoda Karoq if you can? Keen to get your take on it. Keep up the great work!

Brakes are fine, it's a great car. Driving one for a year now, went with top of the range, and I love it, didn't think I'd like it as much as I do, coming from a Mazda RX8.

Just watched your Kia Sportage hybrid review. You achieved a fuel efficiency of 6L per 100km however you were pretty complimentary to it's efficiency and said it was on par with others. So, how is 6.4L not on par?

Not really agreeing with Matt here as I own one TI-L model since last March and done around 14k on it. It is a fantastic car to drive around town with silky smooth feel. I do hear the engine noise when it’s cold. Once the engine warmed up you never hear it. I am sure it will be similar to RAV4 in fuel efficiency if it is similar weight. I can get 5.8L/100kms around town. If you drive harder you may not get that.
I also have a Toyota Corolla hybrid ZR hybrid which I love and very fuel efficient.
No comparison between them as Xtrail is a large SUV great on family trips.

Purchased an xtrail epower st-l - drives beautifully. Crv is $10k more, outlander PHEV doesn’t drive as well and is $10k more. RAV4 isn’t even an option. What are the other options???

What is this youtuber saying? To be honest it is the opposite of what he is saying. I did test drive the Nissan Xtrail TiL epower and it was the best driving experience I had. I compared it with other SUV like rav4, santa fe and sorento. I ended up buying the Nissan Xtrail TiL because of the driving experience and all the features it has. Now im enjoying the real SUV ride:)

The Right Car but the Wrong review(er)!
First review I watch from this guy and probably the last one! Not only for what looks very biased but it goes against every other review I've seen both from Latin America, Australia and not sure if UK. I like Toyotas and have own a few but this X-Trail is superior. My brother owns one and I'm waiting for mine to be delivered.

It is the best choice for urban driving only. I managed average 5.5l consistently with eco, B and e-pedal mode. It’s EV like smooth, NVH is excellent and use electric only a lot under urban conditions. It’s a not so good choice for country road driving. But why do you expect an affordable hybrid heavy tall SUV to be exciting? That is BMW territory I think
