November 14 marks the 75th anniversary of the forced deportation of up to 120,000 Ahiska Turks from their homes in the former Soviet Union. Joseph Stalin sent them from what is modern-day Georgia to Central Asia, because he viewed them as a security threat. But now some of their descendants are moving back. TRT World’s diplomatic correspondent Andrew Hopkins reports from Georgia.

Yeah. My ancestors were deported to Uzbekistan. Then moved to Rostov. Now my family and my cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents live in America.

For those who don’t know, we were deported from our homeland by Stalin because he thought we were agents of Turkey based on our ethnicity.14.11.1944

Bilmeyenler için, etnik kökenimize dayanarak Stalin tarafından Türkiye’nin ajanları olduğumuz gerekçesiyle vatanımızdan sürüldük.14.11.1944

Turks from Ahiska ! Before Soviet power, this region of southern Georgia bordering with Turkey was called Ahiska Pashalygi .
Stalin deported the Turks according to the plan or the Armenian Anastas Mikoyan in order to settle in their homes Armenians whome they brought from Iran and Syria .
The name Turks Meskhetians were also invented by Stalin and Mikoyan . Meskhi are Georgians who lived in small numbers in Ahiska Pashalygi with Turks and they have nothing in common with Turks . The only people who are close to the Turks in this region are the Muslim Ajarians living in Batumi, as well as the Karapapakh Turks and the Terekem Turks living in Borchaly Mahaly in Georgia .
WE ARE TURKS ! Calling us Meskhetians is like calling English Americans İtalian or Spanish and vice versa .
MESKHI ARE GEORGIANS ! WE ARE NOT GEORGIANS ! WE ARE TURKS !

They have a country in Turkey right next door. The Turkish Republic should take them in because these people will be a security threat to Georgian territorial claims. We’ve witnessed it with the Ossetians and Abkhazians, the Georgians can’t afford another alien group.
